Whitewall designs sponsors "The Mystique of the Automobile"
Whitewall Designs was asked by MOTA and the US Institute of Museum and Library Services to design a logo for a concours car show to be held on the grounds of the Lyndon House Art Museum in Athens, GA. The show featured rare and exotic cars from private collections as well as automobile art, memorabilia, artist-built trophies and a fashion show with models stepping out of vintage cars in era-correct clothing. Being an avid motorcycle and car enthusiast as well as an artist, Christopher was well armed to take the challenge. He took art-deco and classical sculptural elements that appealed to the art aficionados at the museum and combined them in an elegant female form that the fashionistas of the event identified with and brought it together in the context of a chrome hood ornament reminiscent of the Rolls-Royces, Bentleys and other classic cars owned by the collectors at MOTA. The logo was a success and was adopted as the official icon of the Mystique of the Automobile organization. Whitewall Designs was then asked to create the 30 page full color glossy program for the show.
It was during this time that the Lyndon House and MOTA issued a call for artists to anonymously submit a painting with a car as the subject matter. The chosen painting would be used on the cover of the event magazine, billboards, signs and promotional materials for the event as well as be sold as limited edition, autographed prints on the day of the show. Being a car enthusiast, Christopher submitted a painting that was an interpretation of a custom car he saw in photos as a kid and his painting was selected by the jury!
At this point, having created both the logo AND the featured art for the show, Christopher was asked to join the MOTA board which he proudly accepted. Whitewall Designs became a primary sponsor for the event by providing full marketing including a website, business cards, letterhead, magazine and newspaper advertising and a 30-page full color program with artwork. Fellow sponsors were the Antique Auto Club of America and the Mercedes Benz Club America who selected the 100 cars that would be displayed.
An idea was proposed to make the trophies from car parts and Christopher, whose hobby is metal sculpture, was commissioned to create over a dozen. Christopher ran a workshop for other artists and offered welding and design assistance to staff and car collectors alike who wanted to build trophies of their own.
An active biker, custom fabricator and motorcycle racer, Christopher was also asked to be the guest curator for a month-long exhibit of motorcycles displayed in a gallery at the museum. In addition to contributing a custom from his own collection, Christopher called on his network of dealerships, restorers and private collectors to assemble a variety of bikes for the exhibit: the latest Ducatis and Harleys, vintage Italian racebikes, classic dirtbikes, a postwar BMW, a Russian sidecar and a bike small enough to carry under your arm. The showpiece was a 1946 Indian Chief previously owned by Steve McQueen. The exhibit was featured in several magazines and was the most visited in museum history.
The entire event was a success and Christopher was busy autographing print of his painting, giving tours of the motorcycle exhibit and event received an award himself for his contributions to MOTA and the Lyndon House museum. A copy of Christopher’s painting was inducted into the county archive and the 30 page magazine he created received an award from the State of Georgia.
Although the event was a showcase for Christopher’s design skills, he would like to thank Nathan Mende of Boxerworks Service, NPR Ducati, Cycle World of Athens, Top Gear Motorsports and Mike Kilpatrick for their contributions to the motorcycle exhibit and especially MOTA chairman Todd Emily, of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, whose love of antique cars inspired him to create the MOTA and whose tireless efforts made the show a success.
